10/30 Narrow Loss in Regional Tourney Ends Season

Loss Fails to Diminish Season Achievements

The Wolves’ season came to an end in a Regional Tournament Semifinal loss to Westerville Central, in a thrilling match that exemplified the fight in this team that left their fans so proud. They had lost to the same team a couple of months ago by a 0-3 score. This rematch came following the Wolves’ District Championship, and the team came in riding a 5-game win streak.

The Wolves fell behind in the match with 2 goals conceded within the first 8 minutes, and fears grew that the August loss might be repeated. However, at the 16-minute mark, Alex Vicente clawed one back for the good guys when he fired a shot past the Warhawks’ goalie. Central scored again at the 27-minute mark, and a competitive first half came to a close with the 2-goal deficit.

The Wolves came out in the second half determined to show that the late-season improvement was no fluke. They fought hard with excellent defense, and Bowen Rick narrowed the score when he knocked in a rebound off a corner kick. Then, with less than 18 minutes remaining, the Wolves drew even when Quinn McGlone buried a penalty kick. The tie score did not last long, however, as the Wolves conceded the deciding score several minutes later, and despite a tremendous effort, the Wolves fell 3-4, ending their Regional Tournament hopes.

Few who watched this match would dispute that the Wolves were the equal of the Warhawks, who are now 13-3-3 and ranked 13th in the state. Simply put, the growth and spirit in this Wolves team were remarkable. This author frankly wondered after the first couple of weeks of the season if this team would win even 3 matches all year. A tremendous coaching job combined with players whose effort and fight never waned, even during a long losing streak, led to a District title and a fine legacy. The team and coaches should be proud of their accomplishments, as I know that their fans are.

Wolves Roll Over #6 Seed Teays Valley In 4-1 Road Victory

The Varsity boys opened District Tournament play with a convincing win over higher seed Teays Valley. The Wolves left little doubt about which was the better team in a 4-1 road win. On a crisp Wednesday mid-October evening, the #8 seed Wolves put together their finest performance at the perfect time in advancing to the next round by eliminating the #6 seed Vikings.

The Wolves exhibited fine organization and passing throughout the match, as well as their usual excellent defense, with Drew Deken playing his customary fine game in goal. The Wolves opened scoring 16 minutes in when Cam Ferris knocked a Bowen Rick corner past the Viking goalie. That score appeared for a time as though it might stand, as the Vikings were unable to penetrate the Wolves D.

Quinn McGlone doubled the Wolves lead mid-way into the second half with an excellent rebound shot. 2 minutes later, the host Vikings cut the lead in half and caused some worry in the visiting crowd when scoring on a corner kick. A few minutes later, Quinn McGlone allayed those concerns when he again scored on an excellent shot that restored the 2-goal lead. The Wolves then put the icing on the win with one of the best goals of the year as Erkan Erciyas headed in a splendid, long free kick from Michaed Dolciato.

The Wolves move on with the 4-1 win, their 4th consecutive victory. They await word of who they will advance against next week, as the District tourney road gets steeper.

JVA Improves But Falls at Westerville South

The Wolves closed out their regular season by travelling to Westerville South to face the Wildcats. It was the end of the year for the ever-improving JVA squad. It was no surprise that they played their best game of the season, though the result did not necessarily bear that out. Under a bright sunshine on this October afternoon, they battled the Wildcats well and exhibited much better passing and form, and the only difference between the two teams were better finishing by the Wildcats, who scored with a couple of excellent shots and a couple of breakaway goals that our goalkeeper had little chance to stop. The Wildcats came away with a 0-4 win, but the Wolves could hold their heads high knowing they fought hard and improved substantially over the season.

The Wolves Varsity were up next and did not look past the Wildcats as tournament play opens next week. The Wildcats struck first under the lights on this crisp evening, scoring the opening goal not even 8 minutes in. The Wolves answered quickly though, with Erkan Erciyas scoring on an excellent, hard shot from the side that he fired past the Wildcat goalie. The tie score then held through the rest of the first half, as the Wolves played very well and with great effort. In the second half, the Wolves scored the winner when Senior Alex Vicente headed in a great free kick from Bowen Rick . The excellent Wolves D allowed that score to hold, and the Wolves walked away with a 2-1 win and a season-ending 3 game win streak.

The Wolves welcomed Centennial High School to WKHS for matches on a clear crisp October afternoon and evening. The JVA Wolves led off by crushing Centennial in a 5-1 win, breaking in the process a 7-game scoreless streak. Ray DiSalvo led the way with a brace (pair of goals), with single scores contributed by Ali Yildez, Marcos Vicente, and Colin Beckstedt (assisted by Fredi Camara). The defense was rarely challenged and deserved a clean sheet but lost that with 39 seconds left when conceding a throw-away goal. Regardless, a satisfying win for the improving JVA Wolves.

It was a special night for the Varsity Senior players and fans as they say goodby to some wonderful young men playing their final home match. We owe so much thanks and well wishes to Seniors Avi Reddy, Alex Vicente, Gabe Toops, Cole Santagata, Wyatt Versele and Max Recard, for all they have done for this program. They have certainly made their marks on this team, and will not be soon forgotten. But, they have a few more matches after tonight before their high school experience ends.

The Varsity dominated the Centennial opponent in romping to an 8-1 win, with the only goal conceded coming in the final two minutes. Cam Farris led off the scoring 70 seconds in. Grady Fuller soon followed with a beautiful header off of a splendid free kick by Quinn McGlone. Quinn then chipped in with his own goal, followed by goals from Grant Darner and Esad Alpay for a 5-0 halftime lead.

Early in the second half Kellen Louk scored off a Cam Ferris assist, after which the 6-goal running clock rule kicked in. Wyatt Versele then celebrated his last home half with a pair of goals to close out the 8-1 win.

After a 6-match losing streak in which they scored a mere 3 goals in total, the Wolves are closing the season on a strong note having won the past two matches with 11 total goals! Hopefully, they can continue that success in their final regular season match and in the District tourney next week.

JVA not so fortunate, but Varsity dominates

On an unseasonable warm and sunny October Saturday afternoon, both JVA and Varsity clubs welcomed Olentangy Liberty to Worthington as they hoped to end scoring droughts and return to winning ways.

JVA continued to show improvement in their match against Liberty, but the results did not show that. The Patriots scored two goals towards the end of the first half and a third towards the end of the second to put the game away. The Wolves had no answer and again were shutout, 0-3. The fine effort never waned, and the results will surely change soon as the team improves.

The Varsity was up next and quickly found their scoring touch as they faced the Patriot's Varsity team. Less than 2 minutes in, Bowen Rick fed Paul Stenberg for the first Wolves goal and an accustomed lead. 3 minutes later Caleb Kinderknecht found the back of the net for a surprising two goal lead for the Wolves. That proved to be all that was needed, as Liberty could only manage one score against the fine Kilbourne defense.

Erkan Erciyas added a third goal for the Wolves in the second half, in a match that the Wolves fairy dominated for a desperately needed 3-1 win. The Wolves showed their usual great effort that has been a consistent feature of their play throughout this year.

The JVA Wolves had hoped to get off to a quick start, but unfortunately found themselves down 0-2 within the first 10 minutes. They conceded a corner set piece goal followed quickly by a breakaway counter goal, and never could recover. Thereafter, the Wolves demonstrated grit and determination with improved play, they just could not find the back of the net. WN tacked on a 3rd goal midway through the second half and the match ended 0-3. The Wolves battled evenly, other than the score.

The Varsity Wolves then went toe-to-toe with the Warriors, and played well until an old nemesis appeared towards the end of the first half when WN scored twice on set pieces. The boys played well and this was a fairly even contest other than the two first half goals. They just struggled once again in the final third, rarely challenging the Warrior goalie. WN tacked on a third goal in the second half, but otherwise, the match was fairly even and the Wolves played hard and well but suffered their third straight shutout loss, 0-3.

The Wolves hope to get back to winning ways as they head into the final week of the season, hosting Olentangy Liberty on Saturday afternoon.

Our Wolves faced a week of Cards, first the Thomas Worthington Cardinals followed by the St. Charles Cardinals, and it ended up being a week to forget, at least for the Varsity and JVA teams. The JVB team had better luck with the Thomas Cards, coming away with a dominant 5-1 win on the road.

The JVA team had no such luck, but at least were consistent, falling at Thomas Wednesday evening and at home v. St. Chas the next night by identical 0-5 scores. Certainly not for lack of effort, and the boys now enjoy a much-needed rest before getting back to winning ways with a couple of home dates next Thursday and Saturday.

The Varsity Wolves are also in search of an offense, following up the Thomas blanking (0-3) with the loss at home against the St. Charles Cardinals by a 0-5 score. That score could have been even worse had not been for a couple of excellent PK saves by Drew Deken. Again, the loss was certainly not due to a lack of effort by the boys, as they worked hard through the final whistle. Injuries have certainly affected the Varsity team, so the upcoming week of rest could not have come at a better time. They look forward to successive home matches (and wins!) next Thursday and Saturday vs Westerville North and Olentangy Liberty.

The JVA and Varsity Wolves traveled to Big Walnut on this unseasonably hot late afternoon/evening in September to face their Ohio Capital - Capital division rival. The JVA team led off with a very competitive match that was marred only by inconsistent refereeing. The teams were evenly matched and battled hard to the end. The Wolves conceded a single goal 20-minutes and had trouble finding chances in the final third, but never was the effort lacking. Following that initial goal, the Wolves fought hard to find a tying score but were frustrated in that effort. The Wolves defense stood stiff until the final minute when a second score was given up on a fluke play when the Wolves were desperately trying to score at the end. The match ended at 0-2.

The Varsity followed with a very entertaining and competitive match against the Eagles. The two teams fought hard in a back-and-forth match with each finding chances but unable to convert, until an inadvertent turnover led to a foul call on the Wolves that resulted in a PK being converted by the Eagles. Less than 2 minutes later, Kellen Louk found the equalizer on a splendid goal for the visitors. That tie held through the remainder of the first half.

The second half opened with what this writer felt was an uncalled foul resulting in a quick score by the Eagles. The teams continued their battles and exciting action, and the Eagles scored a third goal on a breakaway counter with 28 minutes remaining. The Wolves were unable to find another goal despite the fine play and even action. The match ended with a 1-3 score, and excellent goalkeeping by Drew Deken kept the score as close as it was.

The Wolves travelled to Dublin Coffman on this warm Thursday evening with hopes of improving on their respective road records. They returned home licking their wounds after a pair of defeats.

The JVA squad led off the evening facing a 'Rocks JV squad that played more like a varsity team with quality spacing and passing. The Wolves played hard throught the game but could not muster much offense and ended up falling 0-4.

The Varsity Wolves followed with a stong effort against the Coffman varsity, and seemed the stronger team through much of the contest, particularly in the opening 30 minutes. They opened up the scoring in the 18th minute when Ryan Foisett centered a ball that Alex Vincente knocked in to give the Wolves the early lead. That lead did not last long, however, as two minutes later Coffman evened the score on a PK follwing a rare mistake by our fine back line. The tie score lasted throughout the remainder of the fist half.

The two teams battled evenly thereafter, though Coffman broke the tie on a good shot that Drew had no chance to stop about 7 minutes into the 2nd half. The Wolves played well but could not find another score, and Coffman closed the scoring with a third goal with 5 minutes remaining, going away with a 1-3 win.

The Wolves returned home on September 10 to face Delaware Hayes HS. The JVA squad began the evening facing a tough opponent in Hayes, battling to an even standstill in a through the first half scoreless first half. About 7 minutes into the 2nd half they fell behind, giving up a score to the JV Pacers on a nice header. That 0-1 score stood and things looked somewhat bleak until with about 14 minutes left in the game when Cam Toops hit an excellent free kick from 25 yards out to draw the Wolves even. That looked like how the match might end, until with less than 7 minutes left the Wolves hit a long kick that bounced in front of the Hayes goal and Johnny Battle made an excellent play to knock it in for what proved to be the winning score!

The Varsity squad fought hard against the Hayes Varsity team during an even first half that, like the JVA match before it, was scoreless at the half. This was a penalty-filled contest against a smaller but quick and fast opponent. About 7 minutes into the 2nd half the Pacers got behind our defense with a run and scored with a good shot to break the scoreless match. Midway through the 2nd half the Wolves were awarded a PK that Cam Ferris knocked in after a fairly lengthy protest made by Hayes. Less than 3 minutes later Hayes took the lead again on a score that stood until with under 7 minutes to play, the Wolves evened the score on a splendid assist from Erkan Erciyas who centered the ball from the corner under duress directly in front of the goal which Alex Vicente drove home. That looked as though the way the match may end. Once again, the Wolves had a dramatic final minute win when Bowen Rick scored on a free kick rocket shot from outside the 18-yard box that blew past the Hayes goalie. A great way to end a good night.

On a cool Saturday evening in Dublin, OH, neither Varsity nor JVA could muster much offense against their Celtic opponents. The JVA squad led off facing the Jerome JVA squad and found trouble with ball control and in finding scoring opportunities. Only a strong effort and very good defense kept the contest scoreless through the first half. The lack of ball control finally caught up to the Wolves 12 minutes into the second period when the Celtics onslaught finally resulted in the first of three scores, and the final score ended 0-3. The improving Wolves fought to the end, and better days are ahead.

The Varsity squad was every bit the equal of their Jerome opponent, and on a different night may have come away the victor. The Wolves scored first on when Erkan Erciyas knocked in a fine centering pass from Bowen Rick. That ended up being the only score they could find against Jerome who enjoyed a fine performance by their goalkeeper. Meanwhile, the Wolves also had a strong performance and seemed the better team for much of the contest. Set piece problems again caused problems for the Wolves leading 2 of 3 scores given up, including an unlucky own goal. Other breaks went against the rapidly improving Wolves this night, and they ended up falling on the road, 1-3 to the Jerome hosts. They look forward to returning to their winning ways next Tuesday as they host Delaware Hayes.

BTW, the crowd difference at Jerome was noteworthy, as the number of visiting fans appeared to significantly outnumber the number of Jerome fans. (This was not the first time our road fans outnumbered the home fans.)

9/5/24 A Dramatic Final Minute Victory for Varsity Over Dublin Scioto

The Battle of Hard Road ends well.

The Battle of Hard Road did not start as hoped for JVA, but it ended with a thrilling last-minute walk-off victory for Varsity over rival Dublin Scioto. The JVA boys fought hard against a difficult opponent and battled Dublin Scioto to a scoreless first half thanks to some fine defense and goaltending. The tide turned in the second half, though, as Scioto scored three times within 10 minutes on strong shots that Keeper Brogan had virtually no chance of stopping. Scioto was the better team on this night, but our boys made their fans proud with their strong effort and performance.

The Varsity team then took the field against visiting Scioto and matched up very well against the strong opponent. The teams fought evenly through a scoreless first half. Scioto then scored first 11 minutes into the 2nd half, but the Wolves struck back quickly with a fine goal by Ian Varga, assisted by Alex Vicente. The score remained even thereafter as the Wolves played their usual excellent defense to keep the Irish from a further score.

It is obvious at this stage that the strong back line and goaltending is the mark of this Wolves team, and it was no different this evening. As the clock wore down in the 2nd half with the score still knotted, it appeared that the end result would be a draw. The Wolves withstood a furious Irish assault in the waning minutes of the contest, and it came back to bite them as with less than a minute to play, the Wolves sprung a counter with Avi Reddy feeding Gabe Toops as he got loose behind the Irish defense and slotted home the winning goal with mere seconds to play. The very dramatic and hard-fought victory left the Irish players and their fans crestfallen, and it was surely a long ride back to Dublin on the road that Kilbourne owns for the next year!

A Significant Road Win at Westland HS

An area Heat Advisory with afternoon temperatures near records caused the cancellation of the scheduled JVA match, as schools barred athletic events prior to 7 PM. The Varsity match then proceeded at 7:00 PM, and the Wolves, still smarting from the weekend loss at Lakota, wasted liitle time in returning to winning ways. 10 minutes into the match against a difficult OCC opponent saw Caleb Kinderknecht place a great cross into the box that Samba Barrie punched in to go up 1-0 over the Cougars. Due to some fine defense including strong goaltending by Drew Deken, the score stood until midway in the second half when Samba doubled the lead on a PK. The defense continued holding off the Westland attack in the heat, and Quinn McGlone closed the night out with final minute header to ensure the 3-0 shutout. A great way to head into the Labor Day break!

The JVA squad faced a difficult opponent in Westerville Central, and fought hard, playing excellent defense until half-way through the 2nd half when Central broke through and scored. The match looked hopeless until a furious rally by the Wolves in the final minutes led to a thrilling ending when a cross by Erkan Erciyas was headed in by Oliver Kim with only 26 seconds left, earning the Wolves the 1-1 draw. The ending made it feel more like a win.

The Varsity was not so fortunate in the nightcap. The Wolves had some trouble with set pieces and could not muster much in the way of offense, leading to a disappointing 0-3 loss to WCHS in the first road match of the year.

A fine start for both squads, JVA started the night off right with a dominant second half leading to a 3-0 win. A closely contested first half ended scoreless, but second half goals by Nick Nsibula, Erkan Erclyas and Mahmoud Belgasam (the 3rd assisted by Tyler Houk), led to the rout. A fine defensive effort by the defense, including Goalie Brayden Houk, kept Hilliard off of the scoreboard and sent the crowd home happy.

The Varsity squad made sure not to spoil the unusually chilly night with a 1-0 shutout win over the Hilliard Darby conference rivals. The loan goal of the match came less than 10 minutes in when Cam Farris fed Samba Barrie with a pass that Samba buried in the Darby goal. The defense made sure that the goal held up, with a fine performance from Drew Dekin in goal ensuring the clean sheet.

: Thank you to all those who participated in the Heart Walk on Saturday morning. It was quite the event. Thousands of people ascended on downtown Columbus to support the American Heart Association in raising awareness and money for heart health and cardiac research. Our teams were there to support Canen Dickman who is not only a heart survivor, but an advocate and spokesperson for Sudden Cardiac Awareness and AED's. What a positive event for all involved.

But I’m really grateful that it all came together this way, and I got to meet a lot of great people."

A retired Bengals Head Athletic Trainer, Paul Sparling, was at the signing event. He said he was on the sidelines when Hamlin went into cardiac arrest.

"We rehearse those scenarios every year, multiple times a year, and in 30 years, we had never ever had anything like that happen, and to see it happen on national television right at Paycor Stadium, and to see ultimately the successful outcome was just very, very rewarding, and it was a team effort," Sparling said.

While Hamlin could not be at the event Tuesday due to training, he sent a letter to Sparling to read.

"In the words of Damar, I call that ability to save someone in need a superpower," Sparling read. "I’ll always consider Ohio my second home and where I got a second chance at life."

-- Since our Sudden Cardiac Arrest incident last summer on July 7, Canen Dickman and his mother Pam, and myself have had numerous opportunities to tell our amazing story. The 3 of us spoke in front of the Ohio Senate Committee Hearing last wintner urging the passing of House Bill 47 that would provide a state mandate for AED's to be available at all schools and athletic facilities. It also mandates facilities have an Emergency Plan of Action and provide trainings for employees. Canen and Pam were also invited to Washington DC with the American Heart Association to speak in front of our House and Senate leaders at the Capitol.

We are very proud to announce that the Ohio House Bill 47 has passed both the Ohio House and Senate and is awaiting Governor DeWine's signature to become law. Last week, we were made aware that Governor DeWine has asked to sign the bill into law on July 23 at 2:30 at Worthington Kilbourne High School. This is an amazing honor! A big thank you goes out to Canen and Pam who have worked so hard to encourage the passing of this law. I am so very thankful to Worthington Schools' foresight to have the requirements of this law in place years before its passing. Our amazing, positive outcome to this incident was made possible because Kilbourne had provided me training, an emergency plan of action and a readily available AED on site. We are so blessed and thankful! With the passing of this law we hope that there will be many more positive outcomes to future cardiac incidents in Ohio.
